Nesboo Guide - Welcome Guest
Several years ago a new HP iPaq
would be greeted with a great deal of anticipation. At the time mobile
phones were much more basic than they are now, a pocket PC was
essential if you need a place to store all your contacts, calendar
info, notes and something you could expand to include extras GPS
functionality.
In recent years things have changed and it's now a rare sight to see a
mobile device running the latest version of Microsoft's mobile
operating system that doesn't have communications technology built in
as standard. Advanced features such as Wi-Fi, high speed mobile data
connections and GPS are increasingly being seen as standard features.
With this in mind it is, at first, hard to see a market for the 114
Classic Handheld, a phone, and hence communication free, device based
on Windows Mobile 6.0 Classic. If there is a niche for this device it
is for those that don’t want their phone and organiser in the same
device. An example would be those people that wish to leave the work at
office and don’t want to be permanently drawn back to the workplace in
their personal time but that still want an organiser with a good spec
that is packed with useful features.
It has to be said that the iPAQ 114
meets the requirements of these individuals. Visually the device is
very stylish, has an air of quality about it, it’s slim at just 13mm
deep and the controls, are simple and very responsive. With so many
smartphones on the market these days it may seem a bit of old fashioned
to use a standalone PDA but the iPaq 114 Classic answers the need for a
small form-factor device and is very light at just 116g.
A useful feature of the 114 is that it can be connected to you PC via a
standard mini USB socket which can also be used to charge the phone,
assuming that your USB hub is not being overstretched for power.
Another clever feature is the addition of a standard 3.5mm socket,
which lets you use headphones without the need for a special adapter.
There is 256MB of memory on the device with 64MB of Rom. Extra storage
can be added in the form of an SD card, again this is full size so no
adapters are needed.
Connection to a wireless network is simple and the 114 supports both
802.11b and 802.11g. Web browsing is possible when connected via WiFi
and the device uses Internet Explorer which, you can also access both
internet email accounts (Imap and Pop) and those hosted on an Exchange
server. As with any device using WiFi is a real power drain, this
usually a particular issue with smaller PDA’s
In conclusion the HP iPaq 114
Classic is a great PDA, with some nice basic features, at a very
attractive price point, that said there isn’t much it can do that isn’t
done equally well by todays smartphones.
Your choice of device probably comes down to whether you want to
separate your organizer from your phone, if you do then this device may
be the one for you.
